Heaven Hill Distillers is unique. They are the ones who sold their revered wheated recipe to perhaps the most famous Whiskey man Van Winkle during the Prohibition, they are one of the oldest and largest Bourbon distillers in the world, they have the second-largest standing inventory of aging Bourbon, and they have grown to become the seventh-largest supplier of Spirits in the US. BUT… they are still family-owned. In fact, they are the only family-owned production house left in Kentucky. God bless the Shapira family! The Spirit brands owned and controlled by Heaven Hill include Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, their namesake Heaven Hill, and many dozens more. John E. Fitzgerald was a Whiskey legend. The man was a treasury agent who used his keys to the warehouse to “borrow” Bourbon from the best barrels (I guess the word for that would be larceny if you’d get all legal and stuff) and make the smoothest juice. Ahh, a smooth criminal. The story has it that he developed such a good palate that the Old Fitzgerald brand was created in his namesake. In 2012, the Larceny brand was launched to honor the less official side of the Old Fitzgerald.
